Music for Mental Health

Background: Music can be created and used for improving mental health. Music has been shown to change brain activity in a positive manner.

Music Intervention at BRC: We incorporate music with therapeutic properties into our various treatments, including neurofeedback.

How are music and mental health linked?

Music is more than just an art form. It’s a powerful tool that influences your mood, emotions, and even brain wave patternsResearch suggests that engaging in music (listening, creating, and other forms of engagement) fosters an overall sense of well-being, social connections, and emotional stability.

How can music be used therapeutically?

Music has been recognized for its healing effects in therapeutic settings and is widely used as a form of psychotherapy across the world. Music has been shown to help with mood regulation, trauma recovery, and the management of various mental health conditions. Recently, an increase in the incorporation of technology into music therapy has created new opportunities for treatments utilizing music.

For example, some studies explore how listening to specific frequencies and beats help improve people’s mental health; in one study, people who listened to 15 Hz binaural beats saw improvements in their overall memory and cognitive functioning.

Music intervention at Brain Resource Center:

At Brain Resource Center, Dr. Fallahpour integrates his knowledge and expertise in neuroscience, qEEG, brain-computer interfaces, and music production to create music that influences brain and nervous system activity. We incorporate music with therapeutic properties into various treatments we offer, including neurofeedback.

During neurofeedback, the brain receives immediate feedback about its brain wave patterns. Music is a key component of this treatment by serving as a neuromodulator. Music plays as a reward when the brain exhibits positive brainwave activity and pauses when it deviates from the desired brainwave activity. By reinforcing and encouraging optimal brainwave activity, neurofeedback can address and manage a range of symptoms and conditions.

We create music with a precise, science-driven approach, rooted in neuroscience and psychoacoustic principles. Designed to integrate seamlessly with our brain training methodology, this music helps guide the brain into desired states while also serving as a reinforcing reward when those states are achieved.
